Aortic dissection: visualisation of aortic blood flow and quantification of wall shear stress using time-resolved, 3D phase-contrast MRI
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Aortic blood flow in healthy people is characterised by helical flow in the ascending and descending aorta, with corresponding patterns of wall shear stress (WSS) imposed upon the wall of the aorta by moving blood. Flow and WSS patterns in the aortic root and sinuses of Valsalva, and the flow patterns in diseased aortas are incompletely defined. We describe the use of a validated, time-resolved, 3D flow MRI sequence to characterize flow and WSS in the aorta, focusing on the aortic root, and demonstrate the flow and WSS in the aorta of healthy volunteers and patients with prior aortic dissection.

Impact of beta-blocker therapy on thoracic aorta 3D wall shear stress in patients with bicuspid aortic valve
Background Beta-blockers are the recommended medical treatment for slowing ascending aorta (AAo) dilation in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Wall shear stress (WSS) has been shown to promote endothelial cell dysfunction [1] and AAo WSS may play a role in aortic aneurysm growth. Time-resolved 3D phase contrast (4D flow) MRI allows for the quantification of 3D WSS regionally in the tho...
متن کاملAdvanced Quantitative Flow and Wall Shear Stress Analysis at 3T: 2D Vs 3D Time-Resolved MR Velocity Mapping
Introduction: Time-resolved (CINE) phase contrast (PC) MRI permits the assessment of blood flow within entire 3D vascular structures [1, 2]. The resulting high-dimensional datasets (3 spatial dimensions, 3 velocity directions, and time) require new visualization and quantification methods to derive reliable clinical parameters. In this context, an advanced flow quantification tool was developed...
متن کاملBeta-blocker therapy does not reduce ascending aorta wall shear stress in patients with bicuspid aortic valve
Methods Right-left coronary leaflet fusion BAV patients on b-blockers (BB+) (n = 30, M:F = 23:7, age: 46 ± 14 years) and not on b-blockers (BB-) (n=30, M:F = 23:7, age: 46 ± 13 years) and healthy controls (n=15, age:43±11 years) underwent time-resolved, 3D phase contrast (4D flow) MRI. Patient groups were matched by systolic blood pressure (SBP), degree of aortic stenosis (AS), and AAo diameter...
متن کاملVisualisation of aortic flow disturbance in Marfan syndrome by 4D phase-contrast CMR
Methods 15 patients with Marfan syndrome and no history of prior aortic dissection or surgery, and 18 healthy volunteer controls matched for age, sex and height underwent CMR at 3T (Siemens, Erlangen). Time-resolved, 3D velocity-encoded and magnitude data were acquired using a phase contrast CMR sequence (Figure 2). Each dataset was evaluated for flow disturbance by two independent observers, e...
متن کاملThe influence of the aortic valve angle on the hemodynamic features of the thoracic aorta
Since the first observation of a helical flow pattern in aortic blood flow, the existence of helical blood flow has been found to be associated with various pathological conditions such as bicuspid aortic valve, aortic stenosis, and aortic dilatation. However, an understanding of the development of helical blood flow and its clinical implications are still lacking. In our present study, we hypo...
